Does anyone here participate in local Renaissance Faires? That's what got me hooked on the whole history thing.

I'd love to, but there really aren't any in my area that I can get out to. I don't have a car, so I'm relegated to taking the bus. No one else I know wants to drive out to a Ren faire, certainly not just for me.

Eric...there area quite a few faires going on. I have done Ren Pleasure Faire up in Novato/Vacaville for years. Didn't go to the Casa De Fruita one. There are smaller faires that attempt to stick to historical facts and not just getting the beer and boobs crowd. Here is a great group that I love...they were the family that started Black Pointe. And where most of my life long friends come from. Yes, I am a history geek and a closet actor. lol www.themeevents.com
If you check out my friends you can see for yourself.
Also, I get more people hooked to history when I take them to any type of faire or reenactment than having them read or watching educational programs.

Lots of faires coming up...Heart of the Forest starts in May...Calaveras Celtic Festival this wknd in Calaveras. I'm a renny...I discovered faire quite by accident. I was already a history major, with an emphasis on Ren history, and a theater minor...I've done some Shakespeare..I walked in through the gates of Santa Barbara two years and walked into home...Marin is a nice faire, as is Santa Barbara...

You might want to look at the Georgia Renaissance Festival (www.garenfest.com/). It's a few exits south of Hartsfield on I-85, I believe. A bunch of us make the trek from the Northeast each year, and this year is no exception.

Our invasion is on Memorial Day Weekend, so keep an eye out for us!

In the mid-90s I went to an Atlanta area ren-fair that was great. Definitely worth a look see. There is another one in the Fall near Live Oak, FL which is almost in Georgia at the Suwannee Music Park.

I got hooked on faires at the turn of the century (4 years ago) at Maryland Renaissance Festival (touted as the best in all the land). From there in 2000, my beloved fiance and I hit MD, PA, NJ in 2001. . .then MD, PA, NJ, NY, in 2002. . . then MD,PA, NY, VA, and the Fairey Festival in PA in 2003. . . in Sept. of 2003 at MDRF, I asked her to be my wife in front of the crowd and with a good friend of mine (who happens to play Henry VIII). In Sept. 2004, We'll be getting married at MDRF at the chapel with the king as my best man.

Anyway, I've created a bunch of faire critiques at my site; www.blackfoxdesigns.com

check it out and let me know what you think!

I started attending faire at RPFS around 10 years ago... and 2 years later started working at a booth. Now I do guild related stuff at faire & work for an non profit which does educational presentations in schools - our speciality is the Middle Ages & Renaissance eras.

    Yes Yes yes.

I worked RPFS and RPFN in 1988 and haven't stopped doing shows since. Now, I only do NYRF in Tuxedo NY as a "boothie" but I still visit RPFS and MD and any others I can get to.

I have done: CO, MN, AZ, RPFS, RPFN, NY (Tux not Sterling), Stockwood, Sarasota, TRF, Scarborough, Carver MA (King Richards), CRF, and NJRK all as boothie. In addition, I have visited MD, NCRF, FL, VA. I know I am forgetting some....

    I am an addict. Absolutely.

      Greetings,
I'm new here, invited by my good friend Sandy. I did my first 2 years of college in Cedar City, Ut. Watching Shakespeare in the campus' replica of the Globe theater is one of the few things I remember with pleasure. I don't know if they still do the feast, but it's an expereince as well.
      Peace,

We have one in Casa Del Fruita Ca.

We go every year. We took our 4 year old grand daughter who wanted to go as a princess.

She was given many curtseys, bows and tokens and was acknowledged by the queen. She had a blast.

** "We have one in Casa Del Fruita Ca." **

That would be Casa de Fruta in Hollister California, also known as The Northern California Renaissance Faire or NorCalRenFaire. There is a tribe geared for that Faire: ( NorCalRenFaireFolk ) norcalrenfolk.tribe.net/
There are a few discussions of other faires there, but mainly NCRF at Casa.

I work closing weekend there each year for Leather Roses.

My wife and I attend the Minnesota Renaissance Festival every year. One thing that makes it really fun for us is that we go with a friend who seems to know everyone there...so it's more than an event for us, it's like a little community.

I've never worked as a Festie, but have thought about it, like doing Tarot readings or something. But I understand there is a process, and I don't seem to have the time to devote to going through the process. So for now, at least, I'm just a spectator.

Bristol, WI attendant, here! I went once, even dress as a wench, in a costume I paid too much for. After seeing the royal court in their lavish duds, I went right home and started a costume design career. LOL No, seriously. I sell middle class and court garb on ebay. Well, now I'm a belly dancer, so I ditched the corset and threw on some bells and coins. :)

I've worked at Maryland Renaissance Festival for the past three years. It's a large one, indeed, and yes, we do like to think it's one of the best. There's plenty of attention to historical detail, and each year at the faire corresponds to a year in Tudor history.

For example, this year was 1536 in King Henry VIII's court, and it was the "year of the 3 queens". The divorced queen Katherine of Aragon died in this year (and got a lovely little play to do it in), the reigning queen Anne Boleyn was arrested and executed, and that left the field open for for queen-number-three Jane Seymour.

As an actor, it's all a great deal of fun, but a devil of a schedule. 8 hour days in character, and a commitment of 4 full months, including rehearsal period.

Despite all the attention to detail, faires being faires, there's still a good percentage of the "boobs and beer" crowd, as someone mentioned above. And there's plenty of that, too.

At least for all of us actor-types, there are indeed moments of historical "cross-over" when the lines between the ages seem to blur.

For me, I guess it's near the end of the season, in October, as it grows dark, and all the guards break out their torches, and the court has to process with the King through the village to the entrance gate. The village illuminated like that at night by torchlight, with all the courtiers in our high garb, escorted by our guards, etc, musicians playing all along the way.... Yes, by the dark yet gladsome light of Phoebe, it's kinda special.

      Peace.

I have been going to the Southern Renaissance Pleasure Faire since I was about 10 or 11. I just recently started working faire when I joined with the Belles of Bedlam, a singing/ acting group that performs on the NC-17 stage. :) This last run at Northern CA ren faire was my first time performing with them as well as my first time working at a faire and I had an amazing time! I can't wait until this years Southern faire! Hope to see some of you out there! :)

So, the answer would be: yes, I do. :P

I have been attending the Texas Renaissance Festival for approximately 15 years. Luckily my daughter and mother are rennies, too, so there is never a shortage of people to go with. This year we are going to attend the Excalibur Faire (close to Austin) and Scarborough Faire (close to Dallas). We have decided that we are going to try to attend a couple new faires each year. I look forward to attending the MD, AZ & CA faires. We are hooked, too.

The Texas Renaissance Festival is one of the nation's largest, most acclaimed renaissance theme parks where the sights, sounds, tastes and beauty of the 16th Century come alive every Saturday and Sunday for 7 weekends October through November, from 9 AM to dusk.

2004 marked the 30th anniversary of the festival. The festival has many shows and lots to get you into trouble :).
Royal Joust featuring full contact jousting three times a day.
Two wedding chapels: The Roman Basilica and The King's Chapel.
The Gardens of New Market Village:
        The Magic Garden
        The English Garden, "Titania's Bower"
The Water Garden, "Fons Florida Aeterna"
The Rose Garden, "The War of the Roses"
21 stages with over 200 performances daily
        300 Arts and Crafts Shoppes
International Cuisine at 60 food and beverage shoppes
The Royal Fireworks nightly at the close of the festival.
        Over 3,000 costumed characters daily.

        It is a huge affair.

You should check out www.renaissancefestival.com, the site has alot of forums and members who share the interest.

I've done Faire for five years now, and I'm still learning. I work the small faire circuit in California with the Guild of Santa Maria, portraying Florentine nobles, and with a couple of booths and activities at the larger multi-weekend faires.

My favorite so far though was Golden Gate Faire last year. :D Right in the middle of the city, but the park is so big you almost couldn't tell!

Loved GG Faire, authentic fog rolling in and everything. :)

Been doing Faires in Northern CA for 13 years as an actor, and been going to Northern Faire since I was REALLY young...

I agree that the reviews were horrible, perhaps they will send someone next time who knows what it is we are trying to portray, and appreciates the time period.

I've been a history buff since about 7th grade, and I thought that the coverage of the time period was done quite well for something that was only TWO days long!!!

                JMHO..

That's the best you're going to do for Southern California.

As You Like It Productions, which is now Red Barn Productions, normally has a Santa Barbara Faire, but they are not doing one this year. This is from the website:

"Santa Barbara- Sadly, due to the lack of increased expected attendance, we will not be producing the Santa Barbara HOTF Renaissance Faire in 2005. Please check back here for any news on an all new Southern California event!"

(Website: www.forestfaire.com btw- HOTF=Heart Of The Forest. )

I see you are already in the Faire Folk tribe. You might also want to join the RenFaire Folk tribe.

Isn't that sad? With Southern faire ending earlier than normal this year, we could have gone to SB faire for the first time in a few years. That was my very favorite Ren faire of any that I had ever visited/participated in. Besides the sentimental value, as it was where my husband and I first met and started dating, it had such a mellow laid back fun feeling, and the open roofed showers rocked! *sigh* I miss that faire.

With Southern in Iriwindale, it really isn't that far from LA. My husband and I live in the San Fernando Valley, and faire is only a 45 minute drive for us.

I started working Faires in 1993 at RPF in Southern California. I joined Clan MacColin and was with them for five years before moving over to Strapwells for a year. There I assisted Thomas Farr in the inception of the Southern Irish guild "The Army of O'Neill" which became part of the larger Saint Michael's family. I was his Assistant Guildmaster for quite a few years and also a Battle Pageant Coordinator for the last three years I was at Southern.
I have since moved up north, to the Sacramento area and started my own guild called Saint Columcille's Warriors of the Red Hand. If you want info on the guild visit the tribe www.StColumcillesTribe.net
We are doing 16th century Irish and looking for people who would like to work Fair Oaks, Golden Gate and other Faires in Northern California. I'm taking quite a departure from previous guilds I've been involved with and going for historical accuracy on costuming and historical legitimacy through reference materials. We even have a backstory for why the Irish are in England and it's 100% historically based.
Other events our guild will attend as a mob but not a registered guild are include Tahoe, Folsom, Placerville, and a few others. We are currently looking for a home for the guild but have not quite settled on anything due to the need to draw more membership.
I hope to continue working Faires and am glad that Tribe exists to facilitate the meeting of so many like-minded individuals. See you at the Faires!

I'll defintely see you at Golden Gate and will definitely stop by. We will attend but not be working Folsom ... despite it's being one city over from where I live because they 'don't have much room for Celtic Guilds.' I take that as "No Irish Need Apply".
